In Western Astrology, there are 12 Zodiac Signs.
These signs can be understood in two main categories:
By element: Fire, Earth, Air and Water.
By modality: Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable.

The simplest way to understand modalities is by thinking of them as stages.
Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra & Capricorn) represent beginnings, new ideas, birth & creation, initiative, and the past. Which is why these signs are open to starting something new, but can also have an air of nostalgia.

Fixed Signs (Leo, Taurus, Aquarius & Scorpio) represent perseverance, stability, preservation, hard work, growth, and the present. This makes them consistent and reliable, but also prone to being stuck in their ways as they're continuously focused on the "now."

Mutable signs (Sagittarius, Virgo, Gemini, Pisces) represent endings, transformation & rebirth, fluidity, adaptability and the future. Which makes them likely to get stuff done, but can get easily distracted by a new goal or dream.
